The motivation for this project originated from the results of a fatal kayaking accident to Lucas Brandon Turner, who died on the North Fork of the Payette River in Idaho on July 12, 1998, due to the failure of a commercially available helmet to protect his head from blunt trauma.
His father, Gil Turner, established the Whitewater Research & Safety Institute, Inc. (WRSI) as a nonprofit foundation dedicated to making whitewater recreation a safer sport. As such, its current prototype helmet represents the culmination of the Whitewater Head Impact Protection Project (WWHIP) cosponsored by WRSI and Johns Hopkins University’s Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, MD.
