Sep 9 Social Instagram The Shenandoah Staircase run is a popular Class II-III five mile run from Millville, West Virginia on the Shenandoah River to Potoma Wayside on the Potomac in Virginia. I was planning on this run weeks ago, but that shoulder strain postponed it. Going solo was tough with no Lyft service there but i bought a shuttle and launched from one of the multiple local rafting companies. I didn't fish because the WV license was going to be $25. I could have fished the Potomac with my Va license but I chose to just explore and experience the river itself. I had been researching videos and watching the levels for weeks and it was in a comfortable level for my first time there. At this 3 foot level its above scrapey but not pushy, the rapids are at most Class II+ at this level. The first rapid after a mile flatwater paddle is Bull Falls. Luckly there is good footage of this drop on Youtube and a great scouting spot on the train tracks. The far right (river right) slot is the most difficult with a wave that looked like it would throw me and then a sticky wave after. The middle is the easiest and straight forward. The left slot has a little turn and a wave to punch through. I took the left because I like turns. The Staircase section is amazing. Countess slots to chose from on dozens of ledges. A true playground! I shot some then worked of some moves and after two days of riding the Trident 11 with camp weight, I felt super maneuverable with it light. The Potomac offered more fun drops with many slots to chose from. The main rapid is the long wavy White Horse Rapid. At the end I portaged up and ran another drop. The hill at the Potoma Wayside takeout is brutality steep. For a flatlander like me it was tough! But the little cold waterfall there is a perfect post workout cool down. Next time im definitely fishin, this run looked great for it and I didnt even run the narrow tree lined areas. Awesome place and I loved it! #oceankayak #yakattack #paddleva #kokatat #aquabound #bending_branches #aftco #originalmauijim #nauticsport #kayakkevindotcom
Sep 9 Social Instagram Ive been pretty stoked that its been a rainy summer during my first year on the rivers. My favorite has been the Appomattox. The fishin is good, after the first mile flatwater warm up paddle, the rapids are constant all the way to the challenging fall line ending. But my favorite aspect of this run is the endless channels and islands. Everytime I run it I try to find a different route and figure out a way thru. I get to explore something new on the Appo everytime I go. The water was warm yesterday and the fishin was not happening during the day. I could have just saved my arms and started casting after 5pm. Only a few fish but nice ones. Biggest smallie was 17 inches. I didn't film the fall line since the light was low. When I went down Pipeline I thought this was padded enough, ill go down Target Rock. Halfway down the curvy chaotic Class III I notice water shooting straight up, 'That's a rock and Im gonna hit it broadside!' I nail it at full speed and there was no chance of recovery. Ive been practicing grabbing my thigh straps as I go over so I dont get separated from my boat. As im rolling I keep my legs in the straps untill I have a hand on one of em. So now I say to myself 'I guess Im riding this one beside my boat.' I bounce down the drop and now we are heading to the Target Rock which all the flow hits this rock and it will pin ya. I turn the boat between me and the rock. As the boat hits I go under and find some footing and lean back to the right and pull my boat with me and clear the pinning rock. Since im rigged to flip I lost nothing. Im a little bruised up and got a hipper but i had two more drops to go. I cleared my head got my breath back and finished out the run.
