Aug 19 Social Instagram ‘Yamato’ A Land of Mountains, although an ancient culture, Japan is a relatively young land mass, it is still forming now, with around 108 active volcanoes and almost 360 earth tremors a year, it made for an exciting environment to circumnavigate. When we arrived in Tokyo we had very little in the way of mapping, one chart took us south to Nagoya, and then from there we used an assortment of road maps, tourist maps and for the last 400 kilometres we literally kept land on our right. ‘Sui Masen, koko wa doku deska’ was how we greeted fisherman and people along the way. ‘This place, where is it?’ I called our expedition ‘Karma Waters’ because it was a journey meant to be. Somewhere between 4500-5000 miles and 180 days to complete it before our visas ran out and we had to fly out again. Paddling almost constantly through the last day and night we finished the expedition with just a few hours to spare. Within 8 hours of landing our kayaks back on the slipway at Marina Casa Zima, in Yokosuka Shi, we were sitting in a jet plane heading for home. The sudden change between a life of wind and wave, became a life of neon lights and air conditioning, where my only company had been Hadas, now we were cramped between others, hustling and bustling, the shock was so great my eyes flooded salt water down cheeks reddened by the sun.
