Dec 10 Social Instagram Part 1 I am SO SO SO happy with myself ° I just did my first solo kayaking trip, which included getting my kayak off the car and into the water on my own, and I only fell into the water once getting in ° Absolutely #rockingdisability ° First off, this achievement wouldn't be possible without me being adaptive and using as many different tools as I could to make up for what I lack in strength and function. My usual launch spot on Cattai Creek is accessible by car - I can literally drive to the waters edge. To unload, I have a roof rack design that has gas lifts to lift my kayak off the roof and bring it down the side of the car to less than a metre off the ground - which makes it totally accessible to me. Getting in on my own was the hardest part. As I didn't have anyone to hold my kayak, I had to rely on my dysfunctional core/hips to balance it as I lifted my legs in - hard work! The fact that I only had one failed attempt, and that that attempt only failed after I successfully got both legs in, is such a big achievement - thank you to all that hip stability work I do sitting on a Swiss ball. My parents were worried that I might fall out somewhere along my trip, and wouldn't be able to get myself back in. That's a very real concern, so to keep myself safe, I wore Toby's tracking device on my life jacket. My parents would then be able to use an app on my tablet to ping my exact location. It works marvelously on Toby with great accuracy, so it makes a perfect tool to keep me safe. And yes, it's water proof. #partialparalysis #spinalcordinjury #yooocandoanything #brokenbutnotbeaten #adaptive #adaptiveathlete #iamadaptive #kayak #kayaking #prijon #ckayak #training #endurance #hawkesburycanoeclassic #podtrackers
Dec 10 Social Instagram Part 2 Toby's tracker also has an adventure mode setting, which will log a route taken as well as the speed at. Unfortunately I used the app on my phone to turn this mode on too later, so it only sent the message to the tracker when we got back into mobile data range. That was after I paddled down Cattai Creek, and then it messed up and didn't log my trip back up the creek... oh well. It was interesting enough to see what speeds I was doing on the river. On average, I managed 7 km/hr going against the tidal flow, and 9 km/hr on the return trip with the tide. This was a comfortable stroke rate and power use for a cruising pace. I'm happy with it - now to work on technique efficiency and muscle endurance (for that 110 km endurance race I'm planning on paddling next year °) Anyway, back to #rockingdisability achievement... Once I'm on the water, kayaking has a wonderful freedom feeling for me. A peaceful early morning time on the river was so beautiful for my soul. And my soul loves that I can workout like an able-bodied person AND that anyone passing by wouldn't have any idea that I have incomplete paraplegic legs inside the cockpit ° Dad obviously came to get me out of my kayak and get it back on the car. There are still limits to how much I can do on my own ° So pleased with myself and the adaptive fighting spirit that still burns inside ° #partialparalysis #spinalcordinjury #yooocandoanything #brokenbutnotbeaten #ckayak #prijon #adaptive #adaptiveathlete #iamadaptive #kayak #kayaking #endurance #hawkesburyriver #hawkesburycanoeclassic #project366
