News Watch

The Playak News Watch continously finds the world"s new paddling headlines. From the huge number of headlines it finds, Playak editors hand-pick and present the best ones (yes, that is very subjective, but they do their best to please our readers) every day, and those that then get the most reader views are sent out in the daily News Flash. Each Friday, we send out the Weekly Digest (instead of the daily News Flash), containing the top headlines of the past 7 days, as well as the most popular videos and forum topics, and a list of upcoming paddling events.

Review: Rheaume Canoes’ Explorer 16

Paddling Magazine (Oct 22) - As dawn breaks on a cool fall morning, the water’s surface mirrors the muted hues of the sky. The attention of our small group, however, is captivated not by the elusive sunrise but by the Rhéaume Explorer 16, its cherry red hull cutting a striking figure against the shoreline. Classic lines meet modern craftsmanship in […] The post Review: Rheaume Canoes’ Explorer 16 appeared first on Paddling Magazine.  read more...

Canoe Guy BC (Aug 25) - by Mike Elliott, Kettle River Canoes email: artisan@ canoeshop.ca If there is an area of controversy in the world of wood-canvas canoes, the question of the keel would be it. Historically, canoes (and kayaks for that matter) never had keels.  Edwin Tappen Adney documented hundreds of indigenous water craft throughout North America in the early part of the 1900’s.  His meticulous notes, drawings and scale models are presented in the book “Bark Canoes and Skin Boats of North America”.  It was compiled and edited by Howard Chappelle after Adney’s death.  The canoes and skin boats range from small hunting boats around 11’ (3.35 meters) in length to large cargo vessels over 36’ (11 meters) long.  None of these vessels had ...  read more...
